What is capoeira?

Capoeira Angola is a cultural phenomena with roots as old as five centuries, born from african heritage of Brazilian slave population. Although it appears similar to dance, capoeira is a unique blend of fight, self-defence, dance, music and fun. It is a complex game of martial arts and acrobatics, music and dancing, a combination which helps explore physical, mental and emotional capabilities of one's body and mind. Movements of Capoeira angola have evolved from mimicking nature and animals. The goal of a capoeira game is to use one's cunning and technique to overcome the 'opponent', opening his defences for an attack. The game of capoeira is one of questions and answers, with movements flowing constantly close to the ground. Speed is determined by the music, while songs relay messages to the players, which allows musicians to influence the style and beauty of the game. While attacks can be effective and destructive, they are completely controlled by the players, allowing the game to be dangerous and tense, and playful and fun at the same time. All attacks are done using one's legs and head.






Back in the time of slavery, capoeira was a powerful weapon for freedom. Today, the fight is more subtle, as there is no slavery as such. Therefore, capoeira today should be interpreted as a tool for mental relaxation, a way of building physical and spiritual strength. It has transcended the borders of Brazil, and can be found throughout the world. Because of its effect on physical and mental health, capoeira is considered as an excellent workout, especially since it brings almost no risk of injury and everyone capable of performing the simplest moves of capoeira can become its practiotioner. Today, capoeira is recognized as one of ten Brazilian cultural heritages, acknowledging the artform on an official level. It can be experienced in various forms, as a martial art, dance, folklore, sport, self-defence, entertainmernt, an art form. There is no boundaries in terms of age or sex, giving everyone an opportunity to express one's creativity and agillity through music and game of capoiera.
